SEO | Important Facts

  • Make sure you get your keywords right. Your keywords should be exactly what you do and not who you are.

  • The content on your website must be relevant to your service or product. Potential clients don't really care about your life story they either want to buy something from you or use your service.

  • If you are using images on your website make sure your web developers are putting 'Alt tags' on all of them. If you ask them the question and they ask why, walk away as they obvously don't know what they are doing.

  • Move with your market place. Make sure you can add to your keywords at any time. Inevitably your market place will change and if you don't change with it you will be left behind.

  • Remember, its your website, it's your business. Don't be taken for a fool and you must educate yourself before talking to an SEO company because if it all goes wrong the responsibility lies with you. SEO is sometimes seen as a bit like the second hand car salesman scenario and it is because of the amount of people that have been ripped off.  It's really simple, base your descisions on common sense and proof, if they are as good as they say they are let them prove it.

Common SEO Mistakes

  • Don't sign up to something where there is no get out clause for you.  Most SEO companies say pay us now and we'll work on your website and hopefully you will see some results in about 3 months time.

        No! No! No!

A promise of a full refund or walk away.

  • When you engage an SEO company ask them to clarify for you how many clients they have lost in the previous 12 months. You don't want to speak to clients they have now because you don't know if they are friends of the company. The reason you want to speak to old clients is to establish why they are no longer using the company.

Use your common sense. If the promises are big and the cost is low it's probably too good to be true.

  • In the UK, the highest growth came from Yahoo! (12%) followed by Google (6%) while MSN Live Search and Ask went through reductions of 15% and 30% respectively, year on year.

Help with Search Engine Optimisation | SEO

Common phrases and terms used in search engine optimisation.

 TERM

Definition

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation - This defines the work carried out by an indiviual or company on your website in order to get it up higher in the rankings or onto the first page of a search in search engines.

Webpages

These are the individual pages that make up your website. A webpage is a single entity or document that is created using a programming language like HTML, PHP or ASP. A big website like Amazon would have thousands of webpages but a website for a small company may only have 5 or 6 pages.

Website

This is a collection of webpages all connected for a single purpose.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator. This is the name given to your website address. If someone asked what your URL is, you would tell them www.YourName.co.uk

Anchor Text

This is the text you click to go to a website or URL. Here's an example: In the link <ahref=http://www.amazon.co.uk>Go To Amazon</a> the words Go To Amazon represent the anchor text.

Website Hits

When a web page is served to a user or comes up on their screen it counts as a hit. Also, if there are 10 images on the web page these will count as hits. So in this example the total number of hits would be 11 - 1 for the page and 10 for the images. Don't get bogged down with hits as the most important element is the number of unique visitors to your website.

Log File

A web server records everything that happens on it. The types of things it records are who requested a file, when they requested it, which file it was and problems that occurred as well as much more.

Natural Search Listings

These are the results on the left side of the search results that are not sponsored or paid links. The term 'Natural Search Listing' or 'Organic Search Results' is a term used by SEO companies and consultants to differentiate between paid and unpaid positions in a seach result.

Page Views

How many of your web pages have been viewed. A page could be viewed hundreds of times but this doesn't mean there have been hundreds of individuals looking at it because one person could have looked at it 10 times. The point to remember is that unique visitors is the statistic that is most important because the more of these the better chance you have of selling something.

SEO Practices

The practice of SEO is not regulated and because of this anyone at anytime can say they are an SEO consultant. Because of this fact there are a lot of so called SEO consultants who haven't got a clue about how to SEO a website. You must be careful when choosing an SEO company and make sure they can show you face to face what they have achieved with their clients websites.

Search Term Marketing

This is based on the idea that you have search terms that are relevant to your business or service that you provide and you use these as your keywords for SEO purposes.

PPC
Pay Per Click

PPC has become one of the most used phrases on the web. PPC or pay per click means you are paying every time someone clicks on your ad in a PPC campaign. The cost of a click for a given search term all depends upon how popular it is. A mortgage company might pay £20.00 per click and a florist might pay £1.75 per click.

Website
Grading

It is possible to have your website graded for SEO purposes. We offer this service, as do other companies, but remember some 'bad' SEO consultants will tell you everything is wrong so they look like they know what they are talking about for the purposes of getting more work out of you.  Make your SEO justify the things they are telling you and if they don't just walk away.

Can you afford to SEO your website?

This is the question we always ask our clients in the first meeting we have. The response is nearly always the same 'that depends on how much it costs'. If your response would be the same as this or similar to this one then really you should considered if you should actually have a website in the first place. Ask yourself this:

If you owned a fairground would you leave it in a lock-up and never take it out?

Obviously, the answer is no because if you don't take it out you won't make any money from people going on the rides.

Your website is exactly the same thing, if your not going to take it out why have it in the first place. And just to clarify taking your website out is the equivalent of getting it highly ranked in the search engines.

Common Sense

If it sounds good but the person selling it can't explain how they are doing it then walk away because you will end up spending a lot of money and getting very little if anything for it.
